Customs is where shipments get stuck

Most delays and unexpected costs in China–Europe trade happen at customs — a wrong HS code, a missing EPR registration or an incomplete declaration can hold your goods for days or weeks. We handle the full clearance process so your cargo moves through without friction.

What we handle

  • HS code classification — the correct tariff code determines your duty rate
  • Import duty & VAT — accurate calculation for Germany, the Netherlands and the UK
  • EPR registration — packaging, batteries and electrical goods for the German market
  • CE marking guidance — conformity requirements for goods sold in the EU
  • Post-Brexit UK clearance — the UK's own customs regime, separate from the EU

The two costs you'll pay at import

Beyond the freight itself, importing into Europe brings two charges. Understanding the difference helps you budget accurately:

  • Customs duty — a percentage of the customs value, set by your product's HS code and its origin. This is not recoverable.
  • Import VAT — charged on the total of the goods value plus duty. VAT-registered businesses can usually recover it, or use deferment schemes to avoid paying upfront.

The duty rate depends entirely on correct HS classification — a wrong code can mean paying far more (or less) than you should. That's why classification is the first thing we get right. Send me your product and I'll confirm your codes and estimated charges.

EPR — what German importers must know

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requires businesses to register before placing certain products on the German market, covering areas such as packaging, batteries and electrical equipment. Without registration, your goods can be held at customs and you may face fines.

If you sell into Germany, talk to me — I'll help you determine whether EPR applies to your products and how to get compliant before shipping.

Post-Brexit UK imports

Since leaving the EU, the UK applies its own customs rules. Imports from China into the UK require UK-specific import declarations, duty and VAT handling — even if your goods transit through an EU port. We manage both the EU and UK regimes so nothing falls through the gap.

Every importer needs an EORI number (or GB EORI in the UK) before goods can clear. Don't have one yet? I'll guide you through the application.

Documents you'll need

  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list
  • Bill of Lading / Air Waybill
  • Certificate of origin (where applicable)
  • CE declaration / compliance docs (for regulated goods)

We prepare and verify these for you, so you don't have to become a customs expert.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need to import from China?

Typically a commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, plus certificates of origin and CE declarations depending on the goods.

What is EPR and do I need it for Germany?

EPR requires producers/importers to register for packaging, batteries or electrical equipment before selling in Germany. It applies to most importers.

What changed for UK imports after Brexit?

The UK now has its own customs regime separate from the EU, with its own import declarations, duty and VAT rules.

How do I find the right HS code for my product?

Send me your product details — I'll classify it correctly, which directly affects your duty rate.

Do I need an EORI number to import?

Yes — you need an EORI number in the destination country (or a GB EORI for the UK) to clear goods. I'll guide you through applying if you don't have one.

What's the difference between duty and VAT?

Duty is a tax on the goods themselves, based on their HS code and value, and is not recoverable. VAT is charged on top and can usually be recovered or deferred by VAT-registered importers.
