Why choose rail freight?

Rail freight sits in the sweet spot between sea and air. It is roughly twice as fast as sea freight (about 18 days vs 30–40 days) and more economical than air freight for mid-sized volumes. For importers who need faster restocking without paying air freight rates, rail is often the best answer.

How the China-Europe Railway Express works

The China-Europe Railway Express connects major Chinese terminals with European hubs via a network of rail corridors. Goods travel in containers by rail, passing through multiple countries with coordinated customs transit.

Typical Chinese terminals: Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhengzhou, Wuhan and others, with trucking from your factory to the terminal.

Typical European hubs: Duisburg and Hamburg (Germany), with distribution to the Netherlands, the UK and across Europe.

What can be shipped by rail?

Most general cargo is suitable for rail: electronics, machinery parts, consumer goods, furniture and automotive components. Some restricted goods (certain batteries, dangerous goods) may have limitations.

Not sure about your cargo? Ask me — I'll confirm suitability before you commit.

What affects the cost of rail freight?

Rail pricing follows the same logic as sea freight, with a few rail-specific factors:

  • Volume & weight — rail is priced per container (FCL) or per cubic metre for shared containers.
  • Terminal pair — origin and destination terminals and the distance between them.
  • Season & capacity — demand rises ahead of Q4 retail and around Chinese New Year.
  • Currency — like sea freight, rail is often quoted in USD.
  • Customs & taxes — duty and import VAT are separate and depend on your HS code (see customs clearance).

Every rail quote I send lists each cost item separately — no hidden charges.

Where rail cargo lands in Europe

The China-Europe Railway Express terminates mainly at German hubs, with onward distribution to your market:

Germany

Most rail cargo arrives at Duisburg or Hamburg. From there we truck to anywhere in Germany or Benelux. Standard EORI and import VAT rules apply.

Netherlands

Cargo bound for the Netherlands is typically railed to a German hub then trucked or barged onward — often into the Rotterdam region. Article 23 deferment is available for regular importers.

United Kingdom

UK rail freight usually runs to a German terminal, then crosses by ferry or Channel Tunnel. Post-Brexit, a GB EORI and UK customs declaration are required.

I'll map the exact routing and transit for your origin and destination before you book.

Frequently asked questions

How long does rail freight take from China to Europe?

Typically around 18 days, depending on the terminals and border crossing schedule.

Why choose rail over sea or air?

Rail is faster than sea (~18 vs 30–40 days) and more economical than air for mid-sized volumes.

What goods can be shipped by rail?

Most general cargo. Some restricted goods (e.g. certain batteries or dangerous goods) may have limitations.

Is rail freight trackable?

Yes, your shipment is trackable throughout the journey, with updates at key checkpoints.

Is rail freight more expensive than sea?

Generally yes — rail sits between sea (cheapest, slowest) and air (fastest, most expensive). For mid-sized, time-sensitive volumes it's often the best value overall.

Can rail freight reach the UK?

Yes. Rail runs to a German terminal, then crosses to the UK by ferry or Channel Tunnel, with full UK customs handling included.
